The Center for Community Service and Justice (CCSJ) at Loyola joins students and staff with community partners in the Baltimore area, promoting the values of learning through service, recognizing the strengths of the local community, and being an engaged neighbor. By offering programs with our community partners, Loyola provides experiential learning opportunities in the Jesuit tradition of service while, at the same time, providing valuable assistance to the community. In turn, the community teaches us about its most pressing needs and, perhaps more importantly, its greatest strengths. In the end, relationships grow and bonds form between Loyola students and local schoolchildren, professors and social service providers, and campus and community.

What role should a university play in its surrounding community? At Loyola, we believe it is our responsibility to use the expertise and resources we have at our disposal to partner with our neighbors to enhance and revitalize the community we share. Our York Road Initiative is a University-wide effort to support the York Road communities adjacent to our Evergreen campus by introducing resources, services, and opportunities to strengthen the commercial corridor, enhance education and youth development, and build civic capacity. Aiming to improve the quality of life for all persons living, working, and learning in the York Road corridor, the Initiative is an expression of the University core values of community, diversity, justice, service, and leadership in the broader community.

At the Lattanze Center, scholars and students work with Baltimore business leaders to improve upon the current knowledge in the field of information technology. Through funded research, symposia, and working papers about information systems, the Lattanze Center has become an internationally renowned research center, and an important community resource. It’s also a place for the business community to seek answers to complex technology problems, a conduit for communication between employers and potential employees, and a forum for discussion and discovery. The one thing that never changes about the Lattanze Center is its constant evolution.

Each year, the Lattanze Center and leading local information technology businesses honor the Lattanze CIO of the Year, a national award recognizing leaders advancing the strategic application of information technology to achieve organizational objectives.
