Loyola Online Journalism Student Project:
Partnership with St. Mary School of the Assumption,
Govans
Amy Maher, St. Mary's/Loyola Partnership Coordinator

Loyola College communication students enrolled in Prof. Mitchell Tropin's Journalism I class in Fall 2008 embarked on a project for St. Mary of the Assumption School, an educational partner of Loyola College. The journalism students wrote articles on various enrichment programs at the school offered by Loyola volunteers on a weekly basis. Working with Amy Maher, Coordinator for the St. Mary's/Loyola Partnership, students developed their story ideas by talking with St. Mary volunteers, teachers, and children. The Loyola journalism students found the project personally rewarding and educational. The project "continues a tradition of Communication students working with St. Mary's, reflecting Loyola's ethos that helping others is the best way to learn," noted Communication Department Chair Dr. Russell J. Cook.

Carol Monteiro, "St. Mary's Bookworms"

As I stepped through the doors of St Mary the Assumption School, I was transported back in time to my own elementary school years. The doors, despite being regulation size, seemed as if they were made for little people. Walking into the office to sign in, the secretaries immediately knew I was from Loyola. They were extremely nice and helped me locate the bookworm club in the library. The hallways were a little dark but you could hear the sound of children everywhere. I had arrived a few minutes before final bell, and the excitement to leave class was high. read more

Alexandra Kahrer, "St. Mary's Homework Help"

As I walk into the cafeteria of St. Mary's on the first day of the Homework Help club, I am confronted with the faces of over 30 students. Most are smiling, some look at us Loyola students with an expression of anticipation, while some convey looks of uncertainty. Once we each sit at our assigned tables and greet the students who we are going to help, the expressions all change to excitement as they reach for their books and notebooks from their backpacks. read more

Nicholas Molfetta, "St. Mary's Teacher Assistants"

Lauren Giglio and Joyce Higgins, both seniors at Loyola College, spend their Wednesday mornings giving back to the local community. They are teacher assistants here at St. Maryof the Assumption, and as Lauren says, they have loved every moment of it. The girls have been lending their time, patience, and skills to the school once a week for the past three semesters. read more
