Message from the Kodály Director
Professor Huggins teaching a Methodology class
Welcome! At The American Kodály Institute, we are dedicated to meeting the continuing education needs of today's music educator.
We are proud to offer a four-summer Kodály master's degree program, perfect for the working music educator, designed to nurture our students' musicianship and teaching skills to the peak of their potential in an atmosphere of joyful music making. The first three summers of the Master of Music Education in Kodály Music Education program consist exclusively of Level I, II, and III Kodály certification courses, totalling nine credits each summer, and participants receive their Kodály certification after successfully completing Level III. The fourth summer of the program consists of nine credits of education courses geared for relevance to music educators. Participants receive their master's degree after successfully completing Level IV.
Teachers who took AKI Kodály certification courses for graduate credit prior to the advent of the degree program have the opportunity to be "grandfathered" into the Kodály master's program. Any courses previously taken for MSDE in-service credit will need to be repeated on the graduate level.
AKI classes are held during the month of July in state-of-the-art facilities on the charming campus of Loyola University Maryland, under the direction of world-class master teachers. Our philosophy is to customize instruction and provide individual attention as we guide music educators forward from their current level of expertise, while maintaining the highest standards of excellence in musicianship and pedagogy.
This website provides information about every aspect of the AKI program, including a link to the online application. Should you have any questions, it would be my pleasure to assist you personally. Any of our faculty members would be delighted to hear from you via the e-mail links on the faculty page. We hope to see you this summer!
Best wishes,
Amy Branum Huggins
