Urgent Plea from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans is sending out an urgent plea to college service groups to work in communities in the greater New Orleans area trying to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Volunteer groups will work with Catholic parishes bordering neighborhoods that have been especially hard hit by Katrina. Volunteers will help clear debris, remove sheetrock and assist with cleanup of homes, yards, streets, and neighborhoods. Although they know it is difficult with schedules and classes, groups are especially needed "outside" of normal college breaks at Christmas and spring. Volunteers should be willing and able to assist with the physical tasks involved. No special skills required, but those with chainsaws and experience operating them can be helpful. Volunteers who speak Spanish would be an asset in one particular parish. Bring your people skills and good neighbor spirit! Jesuit college university groups may want to build in some time for theological reflection during the service experience; every attempt will be made to assign a Jesuit priest or colleague from the area to lead a reflection process if that is desired. Recommended for groups of 10-15, one-week stay, or long weekend, 8 hrs. per day. Simple meals and basic accommodations will be provided by the parish and/or parishioners.
