Loyola President Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., Greg Derry, Ph.D., professor of physics, and Andrea Giampetro-Meyer, J.D., academic director of Emerging Leaders MBA (ELMBA) and chair of law and social responsibility, recently returned from Mexico representing the University at the international conference, "Networking Jesuit Higher Education for the Globalizing World: Shaping the Future for a Humane, Just, Sustainable Globe," hosted by the Universidad Iberoamericana, Ciudad du Mexico (UAI).
Giampetro-Meyer’s experiences in Mexico led her to create a blog documenting her travels and, as a representative from the Sellinger School of Business and Management, takeaways from the conference as the only representative from a Jesuit U.S. business school in the "Ecology and Sustainability" focus group. She plans to continue blogging back in the States with a focus on social responsibility and sustainability, key themes in the ELMBA program—a one-year, full-time MBA program for recent graduates and those with early career experience—which will welcome its inaugural class in the fall.
The conference focused on frontier challenges such as poverty, sustainability, and human rights as related to the work of Jesuit universities worldwide and featured a keynote address on the intellectual apostolate by Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
According to the Association of Jesuit Colleges & Universities (AJCU), the conference follows previous international meetings of presidents, such as a 2001 meeting when they met to address what Pope John Paul II had described as “serious contemporary problems,” and attending to “their ethical and religious dimensions.” The 2010 meeting hosted the largest international gathering of faculty with presidents to discuss how to strengthen the Jesuit, Catholic identity and mission; to better serve society and the Church; and to better network among themselves and other ministries of the Society of Jesus, such as the Jesuit Refugee Service, and Social and International Ministries.
