Loyola University Maryland speech-language pathology/audiology faculty members Mina Goodman and Cheryl Councill have received the 2010 Shiela Applestein Award from the Hearing and Speech Agency of Baltimore (HASA).
The award, presented at a June 15 ceremony, recognizes individuals whose careers and efforts in the area of early intervention have been instrumental in the lives of children. The award is made possible through the Shiela Applestein Memorial Fund. Applestein was a speech-language pathologist at HASA who strongly believed in the importance of early intervention. Her memorial fund serves to educate individuals and professionals about the importance of early intervention, to create awareness around the issue of early intervention, and to honor those who are making a significant difference in the field.
Recipients also present lectures on topics related to early intervention in audiology, speech-language pathology, and education. Goodman and Councill’s lecture was titled “Tried and True Techniques for Early Communication Intervention for Children with Developmental Disabilities.”
