Loyola University Maryland welcomes author and educator Julie Landsman for a lecture titled “What’s Race Got To Do With It? Engagement, Expectations, and Equity in Our Public Schools” at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in McGuire Hall on the University’s North Charles Street campus. The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by Loyola’s School of Education, the office of academic affairs and diversity, ALANA services, Education for Life, and the Center for Community Service and Justice.
Landsman will discuss the ways teachers can cross the racial, cultural, and economic divide that may separate them from their students. A writer and consultant in education, diversity, literacy, and creative writing, Landsman taught in the Minnesota public schools for 25 years and published two memoirs, Basic Needs: A Year With Street Kids in a City School and A White Teacher Talks About Race, based on her experience in the classroom. She is the author of numerous other books, including Growing Up White: A Veteran Teacher Reflects on Racism, which was released in 2008. She also co-edited White Teachers/Diverse Classrooms, a guide for teachers that encourages reflection and self-examination and calls for recognizing and reinforcing students’ ability to achieve. Her published poetry and fiction include “Laos on the Radio” and “Suspension,” which won the New Letters Award.
Landsman has taught urban education, multicultural education, and literacy at Carleton College, Metro State University, Hamline University, and St. Thomas University, and she has taught creative writing at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. She has given talks and conferences for school districts and colleges throughout the country, and conducted workshops for schools and school districts all over the world. She is also frequently a speaker, presenter, and facilitator at education conferences and workshops.
