Alpha Program The Alpha Program matches the College’s most experienced faculty and scholars with first year students in small, seminar-style classes. Taking some of the uncertainly out of being a first-year student, this innovative, multidisciplinary program offers preparation for college intellectual life. First-year students experience the expectations and rewards of scholarly work through the Jesuit traditions of careful reading, critical writing and intellectual discourse. Cultural experiences outside the classroom introduce first year students to Baltimore and the world around them. What began in 1998 as a tiny pilot program of 160 students has grown every year, and now encompasses more than half the first year class. Early research shows that Alpha participants maintain high grade point averages throughout their College careers. They are also more likely to be student leaders and have fewer discipline problems than non-participants. Endowment funds raised through Preparing Tomorrow support continued curricular and programmatic enhancements to the Alpha Program.
