Science,Technology,Engineering & Math Scholarships

Loyola College in Maryland is offering 14 four-year scholarships for incoming members of the Class of 2012 interested in majoring in:

The scholarships, worth up to $10,000 per year, are funded by a landmark grant from the National Science Foundation. Scholarship winners will be chosen on the basis of academic promise, financial need and intent to major in an eligible discipline. Priority will be given to minority students, students from Baltimore City, and students interested in an undersubscribed discipline such as Chemistry, Computer Science,  Engineering, Mathematics or Physics.

Details

What does the program provide?

Students who major in the sciences at Loyola benefit from the close personal attention that can occur at a teaching-focused institution, as well as small classes that average just 18 students.  Advanced classes can have as few as three students, allowing for strong mentoring by distinguished faculty.

In addition to the program’s significant financial support, scholarship winners will also receive:

  • Tutoring and mentoring, including mentoring by science faculty and Loyola’s Internship Coordinator
  • Opportunities to participate in special program events each semester
  • The chance to enroll in a special section of the College’s First-Year Experience course led by scholarship program principal investigator Dr. Roberta Sabin, a Computer Science professor

To retain their awards over four years, scholarship recipient must declare a major in an eligible discipline by the end of their first year, continue in that major and maintain a 3.0 average in coursework required for the major.

How Can it Help?

Loyola received a similar National Science Foundation award in 2002 to support 24 students in the Class of 2007 and those students participated in a variety of programs:

  • Five participated in summer research through the College’s Hauber Fellows program
  • Five studied abroad
  • Several served as professional interns
  • One is deeply involved in community service
  • One was president of the campus Math Club
