Fine Arts - Music
Loyola's music program emphasizes a three-pronged approach to the study of music — performance, music history, and music theory. The program combines active participation in music performance courses, including Ensembles, Applied Music (private lessons), recitals and concerts with study in music history and theory. Students can major or minor in fine arts with a concentration in music, or they can combine music with another major, or take courses as electives. Students develop their knowledge of and capabilities in music, enhancing the power to perform, create, study, understand, and enjoy music. Faculty emphasize the development of interpretive performance, analytical skills, and creative, critical thinking.
Loyola offers a specialization in music education. In addition to the Loyola diploma, music education graduates receive the Maryland State Teaching Certificate for Music (N-grade 12, vocal/general and instrumental music), which meets requirements for certification in states with reciprocity agreements. Of interest to vocal music teachers, Loyola and the American Kodaly Institute offer a masters degree and certificate program in Kodaly Music Education.
