Public Safety

Public safety consists of a staff of special police officers trained in community-oriented strategies. Campus police patrol on foot and bicycle and in clearly marked campus police vehicles. Escorts by uniformed police are available 24 hours a day, seven days per week. More than 35 closed circuit television cameras are placed at strategic locations and are monitored 24 hours a day. Emergency phones, equipped with one touch dialing and designated blue lights are located within close proximity of most parking lots and walkways. Public safety distributes incident reports to inform the University community of any potential hazards, whether on campus or in the surrounding community.

Campus police receive training conducted by experienced instructors from state and local police jurisdictions. The instructors are certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Training is also provided by outside agencies. All campus police officers are certified as "First Responders" following intensive first aid training certified by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Systems.

There are 30 sworn police officers that provide a 24 hour presence on the campus. The campus is broken down into five posts with an officer assigned to each. All five posts are manned 24 hours a day. Loyola campus police have full authority on campus and all Loyola properties.

The Student Escort/Monitor Service employs specially selected and trained students to provide safe, reliable foot escorts to locations on campus and van service to and from off-campus locations, as well as the monitoring of parking lots, outside perimeters of residence halls, and academic facilities. All members of the Student Escort/Monitor Service are hired as members of the department of public safety.
