Loyola has ramped up its sustainability initiatives in recent years to now include all of the following:
Energy Management Plan
- Passed by the President’s Cabinet in January 2009
- Heating and Cooling Temperature Set-points
- Nighttime energy set-backs
- Restrict energy wasters such as space heaters
Single Stream Recycling
- All recyclables go in the same container
- Increases options for what we can recycle
- On average, the University recycles 35% of its waste
Recyclemania
- For the past three years Loyola has participated and topped Maryland in the per capita category nationwide
Sustainability Committee
- In summer 2009, Loyola created a sustainability committee comprised of students, faculty and administrators
- This committee launched a campaign to help change the behaviors of the entire Loyola community
Water Conservation
- Low-flow shower heads
- Energy star washers
“Green” Residence hall
- Takes advantage of geothermal energy
- Recycled materials used in construction
- 20,000 square foot "living roof" made of plants to reduce heat absorption and increase water retention
Dining Services
- Recyclable “to go” containers
- “Trayless” dining
- Local food options
- Farmer’s market on the Quad during peak growing seasons
- Organic and fair trade options
Carbon footprint
- A company has been contracted to help the University determine its carbon footprint and determine where there are areas for improvement
