Our Founding.
And Foundation.
It is only fitting that the Jesuits, the intellects of the Church, were founded in an educational setting. The University of Paris, to be specific. The day was August 15, 1534, and Ignatius of Loyola, along with six fellow students, founded the order of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits made it their mission to impart cura personalis—or care of the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. During the centuries that have followed, Jesuits have become synonymous with higher education as a result of their extensive work as teachers, researchers, and world travelers—actively searching for knowledge through their broad life experiences. All in preparation to better serve humanity. Their purpose-driven order set high standards of academic excellence, service, community building, appreciation for other cultures, and the ability to see God in all things. The same high standards upon which St. Ignatius built the Jesuit order are the hallmarks of the institution that bears his name—Loyola University Maryland.
