Note that modifications to these requirements are subject to departmental approval. See the concentration advisor for more details.

Mathematics Major

Applied Mathematics

Mathematical modeling in the physical and social sciences.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Mathematician

Seven advanced MA/ST courses including: Analysis I; Advanced Linear Algebra; Numerical Analysis; Computational Mathematics; and three other 400 level MA/ST courses.

General Program

This concentration offers a survey of many areas of mathematics and is the option that offers the most flexibility in courses.  Consequently, it is the option that is most suited to students who wish to study abroad.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Mathematician

Seven advanced MA/ST courses, at least four of which need to be MA courses. Courses must include Analysis I, and one of Algebra: Rings and Fields or Algebra: Groups, and one of the full year math sequence.

Pure Mathematics

University and College teaching, academic and industrial research.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Mathematician

Seven advanced MA/ST courses, at least four of which require Discrete Methods as a direct or indirect prerequisite. Courses must include Analysis I, one of Algebra: Rings and Fields or Algebra: Groups, and the full year sequence in analysis or algebra.

Secondary Education

Mathematics teachers at the middle school and secondary level - very much in demand.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Teacher

Students interested in Secondary Education may follow one of two courses of study: the Secondary Education Concentration, or some other concentration together with admission to the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. These students should choose between the courses of study as early as possible: education courses taken at the undergraduate level will not count towards the requirements of the MAT program. Students in the MAT program are strongly encouraged to take MA431, and MA441 (these courses are required for students in the Secondary Education concentration).

Statistics Major

Actuarial Science

The statistics of the insurance field, life insurance, and casualty insurance.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Actuaries

Eight advanced MA/ST courses including: Elements of Statistical Theory I/II and Experimental Research Methods. Students are required to take Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Laboratory, R Computing and Survival Analysis. Microeconomic Principles, Macroeconomic Principles (EC102 &103), Financial Accounting (AC 201), and Financial Management (FI 320). Information Systems (IS 251 ) is strongly recommended as an elective for students in this concentration.

Statistical Science

Graduate study in statistics, biostatistics, consulting statistician to government and industry.
Bureau of Labor Statistics: Nature of the Work: Statistician

Eight advanced MA/ST courses including: Elements of Statistical Theory I, Experimental Research Methods, and Elements of Statistical Theory II or Experimental Design. Students are required to take Statistical Analysis System (SAS) Laboratory and R Computing and Survival Analysis. Computer Science II (CS 202 ) is strongly recommended as an elective for students in this concentration.
