After the traditional grounding in Calculus and Statistics in the first year, the Sophomore year exposes students to courses in various other branches of mathematics that provide a solid foundation for their further study of statistics. The choice of concentration in the statistics major partially determines what sequence of courses the student pursues in junior and senior year.
First Year
| Fall |
Spring |
| MA 251 - Calculus I |
MA 252 - Calculus II |
| CS 201 - Computer Science I |
MA/ST 210 - Statistics |
Computing Notes:
1. While CS 202 is not a requirement for the degree, the practice of statistics requires a solid knowledge of computing. We strongly recommend that you take CS 202 either in the spring of freshman year or your sophomore year. Actuarial Sciences concentrators are strongly encouraged to take IS251.
2. All statistics majors take ST 365, a 1-credit SAS Laboratory course. In addition, Mathematical Statistics and General Statistics concentrators take ST366, a 1-credit course in Statistical Computing using R.
Second Year
| Fall |
Spring |
| MA 351 - Calculus III |
MA 301- Introduction to Linear Algebra |
| MA 395 - Discrete Methods |

Third and Fourth Year
At this point a student could narrow their focus by choosing one of the three concentrations: Mathematical Statistics, General Statistics, or Actuarial Sciences. Students take eight 400-level courses chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor. The coordinators are listed here.
