Welcome from the Department Chair!

Beth A Kotchick

Welcome to the psychology department website! We are eager to share all the exciting events, fantastic people and impressive accomplishments of our department, so I hope you spend some time exploring our site and learning more about us. First, let me introduce the newest members of our esteemed faculty. Dr. Frank Golom joins us as an assistant professor with expertise in social and organizational behavior. Dr. Golom will be teaching courses in industrial-organizational psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and conducts research on sociodemographic and sexual orientation diversity in the workplace. Dr. Mary Jo Coiro transitions to a new role in the department as an assistant professor and will be teaching courses on psychological assessment and psychopathology, as well as continuing to supervise graduate students at the Loyola Clinical Centers. Dr. Coiro’s research focuses on the impact of maternal depression on children, adolescents and young adults, as well as the prevention of psychopathology among at risk youth. Dr. La Keita Carter joins the leadership team at the Loyola Clinical Centers as Psychology Division Director and clinical assistant professor in our department with expertise in diversity issues and a diverse background in teaching and counseling. We also are delighted to have Dr. Denise Bike join our department as a visiting affiliate assistant professor. Dr. Bike will be teaching a number of core graduate courses in the areas of psychotherapy, assessment, ethics, diversity and research methods.

The department is a vibrant community of teachers, scholars, clinicians, students and staff united in their dedication to the highest standards in education and training for future psychologists and the promotion of the discipline of psychology. Throughout this site you will find information about the exciting research, leadership, advocacy and training activities that our faculty and students engage in every day. Here are just a few highlights:

  • The faculty of the psychology department recently affirmed their commitment to diversity and inclusion by participating in a two-day diversity retreat that culminated in the development of the department’s diversity statement
  • Our doctoral program (Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology) was reaccredited by the American Psychological Association over the summer, an achievement that speaks volumes about the quality of teaching, training and professional mentorship provided by our faculty and the excellence of our students.
  • In Fall 2013, we launched a newly revised curriculum for the master’s programs that nicely reflect advances in the field and better positions students for meeting recent changes in licensure requirements.
  • Revisions to our undergraduate major curriculum have now been fully implemented to offer students more flexibility in scheduling the courses that are of most interest to them and to expand their opportunities to engage in research and field experience.
  • The Center for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Brain Injury and Disorders (CPRBID) at the Loyola Clinical Centers was officially established in 2012, with support from the Stulman Foundation. Under the supervision of Dr. Chris Higginson, psychology graduate students conduct neuropsychological testing within an innovative interdisciplinary team setting for clients suffering with a wide range of brain disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury and dementia.

We hope that you find what you are looking for on our site, whether that is information about the psychology major at Loyola or our graduate programs, information about current research opportunities, updates on your favorite faculty and alumni or general information about the field of psychology and Loyola University Maryland. If you cannot find what you need or have ideas or information to contribute to our site, please contact Ms. Casey Hofmann at 410-617-2298 or cmhofmann@loyola.edu

Thank you!
