Graduate Admission Requirements and Deadlines

Application Deadline:

Dec. 1 All application documents must be postmarked by the deadline.
(Fall Semester Only)

Degree requirements include 120 credit hours for students entering the first year of study (M.S./Psy.D.), and 97 credit hours for those entering their second year (Psy.D.). In addition to a one-year, full-time internship, all students are required to complete comprehensive examinations and a doctoral dissertation.

Admittance to the doctoral program in psychology is contingent upon passing a criminal background check. Each student recommended for admission into the program will be required to obtain, pay for, and pass a criminal background check. These background checks are routinely required by the Loyola Clinical Centers, schools, hospitals and other agencies that participate in the clinical education of our students. Failure to pass a criminal background check may make you ineligible to complete requirements and result in revocation of your acceptance into the graduate program. Additional information regarding the criminal background check process will be included in your acceptance letter

Interview Day:

Fall 2016 Interview Day: Friday, Feb. 19, 2016 (invite only)

Interview Day for the Psy.D. program is an opportunity for applicants to find out more information about the program and campus as well as for faculty and current students to get a feel for the applicant’s fit for the program. During the Interview Day process, applicants will interview with three individual faculty members and three pairs of current Psy.D. students. There is also an information session, campus tour, and lunch provided throughout the day. Applicants are then invited to a reception at the Loyola Clinical Centers following the final interviews. Interview Day is a requirement for admission

Required Application Materials

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that a completed application and all supplemental materials are received by the application deadline. Supplemental materials, once received, become the property of Loyola University Maryland and cannot be returned.

  • Application form.
  • Nonrefundable $60 application fee.
  • Essay/personal statement (essay prompts can be found on the My Account Page).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. This includes transcripts from part-time study, study abroad, coursework taken at a community college, and from institutions that have awarded the applicant a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree or an advanced certificate. Admitted students who fail to submit a final degree-posted transcript will not be permitted to register.
     
    Applicants who hold degrees or have earned credits from non-U.S. institutions (excluding study abroad programs) must have a course-by-course evaluation and translation of their academic records done by an approved evaluation services agency before they can be considered for admission to a degree program. The evaluation must establish that the applicant has earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.  Loyola recommends the WES:ICAP from World Education Services, Inc. (www.wes.org).
     
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. Report must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service. Loyola's institution code is 5370.
    • General GRE test scores are required. Scores must be from tests administered within five years of the application date in order to be considered current.
    • GRE Psychology Subject test scores are not required and will not be considered in the application process.
  • Three professional/academic letters of recommendation (link to download the required form).
    BOTH the form and a letter are required for each reference. Please download the editable PDF above and read the directions carefully. You will complete the top section. You may then mail or email this form to your reference. If completing electronically, there is a space for your reference to insert their narrative and then email the completed form in directly. If completing by hand, their reference form must accompany a letter of recommendation.
  • Resume or curriculum vita.
  • TOEFL score report. The TOEFL examination is required only if English is not the applicant's native language or if the applicant has not completed a degree program taught in English. TOEFL scores must be from tests administered within two years of the application deadline. Official scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service. Loyola's institution code is 5370.
  • International Student Supplemental Forms (required only if a student visa is needed).
  • An interview (by invitation only) is requested of all finalists for the Psy.D. program. Interviews occur approximately eight weeks after the application deadline.
    • Fall 2016 Interview Day is Friday, Feb. 19, 2016

Additional Application Information

It is the policy of departmental admission committees to give promising applicants the opportunity to undertake graduate work. A careful examination of an applicant's academic and professional qualifications precedes every admission decision. The committees look for previous academic achievement by considering an applicant's undergraduate and graduate records. Work experience is assessed through the presentation of a resume or vitae and professional references.

Applicants accepted for graduate study will be advised in writing. At the time of admission, Individuals will be informed of any courses for which they have qualified for advanced standing and/or additional courses or prerequisites requiring completion before commencing their graduate studies. A program advisor who assists in planning a program of study will be assigned, and students are responsible for discussing any special needs they may have with their advisor.
