
Given annually by the Center for the Humanities, the Nachbahr Award recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship or creative work by a faculty member in the humanities. It is named in honor of Bernard Nachbahr, a long-time and much beloved philosophy professor at Loyola and the first Director of the Center. His career exemplified a deep commitment to the civilizing power of the humanities. The awardee delivers a public lecture during the weekend of Honors Convocation on the general theme of "The Life of the Mind" and receives an honorarium of $2,000. A reception after the lecture and a dinner also honor the recipient.
Dr. Elizabeth Schmidt was the recipient of the 2007 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Schmidt is a Professor of History. On September 28, 2007, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Schmidt delivered the lecture "Theory and Praxis: Education for Action in a Diverse and Changing World." Dr. Drew Leder was the recipient of the 2006 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Leder is a Professor of Philosophy. On September 30, 2006, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Leder delivered the lecture "The Life of the Mind in the Year of the City." Dr. Tom Pegram was the recipient of the 2005 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Pegram is a Professor of History. On October 1, 2005, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Pegram delivered the lecture "The Practical Life of the Mind: Scholarship and the Small College." Dr. Keith Schoppa was the recipient of the 2003 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Schoppa is a Professor of History and the Doehler Chair. On October 4, 2003, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Schoppa delivered the lecture "Culture Bound: How We Understand the Past." Dr. Richard Boothby was the recipient of the 2002 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Boothby is a Professor of Philosophy. On September 28, 2002, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Boothby delivered the lecture "Life of the Mind: Why Read Freud? " Dr. Stephen Fowl was the recipient of the 2001 Nachbahr Award. Dr. Fowl is a Professor of Theology and Chair of the Theology Department. On September 29, 2001, at the Honors Convocation, Dr. Fowl delivered the lecture "Generosity and Wisdom: Jesuit Higher Education and the Life of the Mind." |
