NEW AND UPDATED COURSES

Dr. Randall Donaldson will teach ML342 "From Plymouth Rock to Ellis Island: An Examination of Immigration to America."  This course will examine immigration primarily as a cultural phenomenon, focusing on the process and its impact on the individual immigrant.  Students will investigate the political, social and economic conditions which may have motivated someone to leave his native country, as well as the sdjustments a person had to make upon arrival in North America.  Students will also have an opportunity to consider the subject from the vantage point of their own family background.  Offered Wednesday evenings from 6.30-9.00 pm.

Dr. Nicole Garcia will teach SN 320 "Introduction to Spanish Linguistics" on MWF at 10.00.  This is an introductory course to the basic linguistic issues concerning the Spanish language.  Students will explore basic concepts of the principle areas of linguistics, such as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, dialectology, and historical linguistics.  The focus will be placed on the understanding of the basic tolls involved in linguistic analysis and their application in the Spanish language.  Prerequisite: SN 201 and SN203 or SN217

SN346 "Violence and Culture: Colombia in the 20th Century," will be taught by Dr. margarita Jacome on MW from 3.00-4.15.  This course will explore the cultural territories that represent the complex and unique political, economic and social realities of Colombia.  Students will examine of important events in history of the 1980s as recreated by writers Restrapo, Vallejo, and Franco Ramos.  Modern conflicts, such as social violence, guerrilla resistance and marginality portrayed in testimonial writings, documentaries, and paintings will be addressed.  Students will analyze the rise of drug-trafficking, young assassins and their socio-cultural practices, as well as juvenile violence.  Students will also study how other cultures perceive Colombia and the growing violence Colombia has faced in the last 30 years.  Prerequisite:  SN203 or SN217.  Counts toward latin American and Latino Studies minor.
