RuaneT. Peter Ruane, DPA, ’66

Chair of the Board

Dr. Ruane is the president and CEO of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association in Washington, D.C. He has more than 35 years of diversified experience in the economic development, transportation, and construction fields.

Dr. Ruane is a graduate of Loyola College in Maryland, and holds a master's degree from the Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He also holds the professional designation Certified Association Executive (CAE). He is a decorated Vietnam veteran, having served as an officer with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Dr. Ruane is interested in Loyola's engineering, political science, and history programs. He played basketball and track at Loyola.

He and his wife, Pat, reside in Davidsonville, Maryland, and have four grown children (Jeanne, Loyola MBA; Tom; Katie; and Colleen) and eight grandchildren.


GeckleGeraldine (Gerry) Johnson Geckle, ’74

Vice Chair of the Board

Ms. Geckle is a senior human resources executive with extensive experience integrating the human resources function with overall business strategy. She is currently Vice President, Human Resources for Universal Health Services, Inc., (UHS) one of the nation’s largest healthcare management companies, operating through its subsidiaries acute care hospitals, behavioral health facilities and ambulatory centers nationwide, in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.   

Ms. Geckle received a degree in Sociology from Loyola in 1974. She is related to the Sellinger family.

Ms. Geckle is very interested in Loyola’s internship and career mentoring programs.

She resides in Berwyn, PA, and is the mother of Christopher, a senior at Loyola University Maryland and Annie, a sophomore at The University of Richmond.


James P. Daly, Jr., ’76
B.S. in Biology

Mr. Daly was most recently the managing director of business development at Legg Mason Capital Management in downtown Baltimore, where he oversaw new business development for institutional investors in the U.S. and overseas.

Mr. Daly graduated from Loyola in 1976 with a degree in biology. Later, he was a member of the Executive Parent's Council for Loyola University Maryland and served as national chairman of the annual Evergreen Fund.

He lives in Owings Mills, MD, with his wife, Jane. His oldest son, Jimmy, graduated from Loyola University Maryland in 2009 and played lacrosse, while Mr. Daly himself played basketball for Loyola. Mr. Daly’s youngest son is a freshman at Syracuse University.


FlachGloria A. Flach, ’81

Gloria A. Flach is corporate vice president and president of Enterprise Shared Services for Northrop Grumman. In this role, Flach leads an Enterprise Shared Services organization that encompasses a variety of service and support functions including Information Technology Solutions, Finance Shared Services, Enterprise Solutions Group, Procurement Shared Services, Human Resources Shared Services, Corporate Administrative Services, Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety, Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Security and Flight Operations.

She earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in business administration from Loyola University in Maryland and was inducted into Loyola's Computer Science Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions in the field. In addition to her education at Loyola, Ms. Flach has also completed the Executive Marketing Program at UCLA and the General Manager's Program at Harvard University.

Ms. Flach is interested in developing the sciences at Loyola University.


GeogheganMichael Geoghegan

Michael Geoghegan is vice chairman at CB Richard Ellis. His accomplishments include a variety of commercial leasing, sales, consulting, and financial advisory assignments, along with dedicating significant time and resources to shaping the company’s long-term strategic direction.

Previously, Mr. Geoghegan was a principal with the Trammell Crow Company, responsible for commercial projects in Baltimore and the Mid-Atlantic area of the country.

Mr. Geoghegan is a retired Commander in the Navy and a former P-3 pilot.

He lives in Rye, New York with his wife, Kathy, and their three children, Blaine, ’08, James, and Katie, '15.


Eugene I. Kane, Jr., Esq., ’80
B.A. in Business Administration and Economics
J.D., Georgetown University

Mr. Kane manages his own law office in Washington, D.C. He represents corporate and private clients in labor relations and employment litigation, antitrust review, commercial premises liability, estate planning, products liability, and commercial banking litigation.

Mr. Kane successfully completed a double major in Economics and Business Administration with honors. He is a member of Phi Delta Phi, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit National Honor Society. While at Loyola he actively participated and held various positions of leadership in student government. After graduating from Loyola, he pursued a law degree at Georgetown University in D.C.

He is very interested in Loyola’s Jesuit Catholic programs and in promoting the liberal arts.

Today, Mr. Kane holds active leadership roles in Boy Scouts, Gonzaga College HS, Knights of Columbus and the Federal Bar Association in both D.C. and Maryland. He is married to Lisa Maio Kane, also Class of 1980, who earned a B.A. in English Literature.


Ronald McKinney, S.J.
Ph.D., Fordham University

Ronald H. McKinney, S.J. received his Ph.D. from Fordham University in 1980 and came to the University of Scranton in 1984. He was director of the Special Jesuit Liberal Arts Program from 1986-2010.  He specializes in Philosophy and Literature, Postmodern Studies, Ethics, and Lonergan Studies. He recently had one of his plays produced (HAMMARSKJOELD) in Baltimore at the Spotlighters Theatre. He is currently running faculty seminars and workshops in Ignatian Vision and Pedagogy.


Kirby C. Smith

Kirby Smith is associate manager and vice president at Ameriprise Financial in Timonium, MD. Mr. Smith has more than 30 years experience in the securities business as an investment banker and investment advisor. He has previously been employed at Morgan Stanley and Alex Brown & Sons.

Mr. Smith earned a bachelor degree in finance from Georgetown University, a Masters in Business Administration from George Washington University, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law.

Mr. Smith has served as a board member of the St. Joseph’s Medical Center, The Cathedral School, and Catholic Charities of Baltimore. He is also an adjunct professor of finance and investments at Loyola University Maryland and Stevenson University. He has three grown boys and has coached sports, including the founding of Loyola Blakefield’s Rugby Team, for more than 20 years.


Michael Spillane, '04
B.A. in English

Upon graduating from Loyola as an English major with a business minor, Michael Spillane went to work at Fimat USA (now Newedge Group) as a clerk with their bank loan brokering group. In November 2004, he joined Contrarian Capital Management as a trader working with equities and corporate bonds. As of June 2011, Mr. Spillane currently serves as head trader and Senior Vice President for Contrarian, a hedge fund managing more than three billiion in assets specializing in distressed investing. 

Two of his three brothers, Tim ('99) and John ('97), are also Loyola College of Arts and Science alums working in finance and his three sisters-in-law Michelle ('99), Robin ('97) and Charlene ('97) are Greyhounds as well. He is married to a fellow Loyola alum, Clare Donnelly ('04) and lives in New York City. 


Jose D. Vargas, Jr., M.D., '99
B.S. in Biology
Master's from Oxford
M.D., Harvard

Dr. Vargas is currently enrolled in the cardiology fellowship program at Johns Hopkins University. He has produced five noted publications and has recently completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Vargas graduated from Loyola in 1999 after studying Biology. He is Loyola’s first Rhodes Scholar. After Loyola, he attended Oxford University, and then went on to Harvard for medical school.

Dr. Vargas is interested in expansion of Science programs at Loyola, as well as our diversity initiative.

He has an interest in sports, especially soccer. He enjoys Latin dancing and Latin American literature, and resides in Silver Spring, Maryland with his wife, Ruth.
