Michael Eric DysonMichael Eric Dyson, award-winning author and the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Religious Studies and Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, will deliver the 13th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Convocation address at Loyola College on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006. The Convocation begins at 7 p.m. in McGuire Hall on the College's North Charles Street campus, followed by a question-and-answer session, reception and book signing. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public, but tickets are required.

Preacher, professor, author, media commentator, and cultural critic, Dyson has been lauded by the Washington Post as among "a group of young intellectuals who may yet define our view of black American culture as did their predecessors Ralph Ellison and Albert Murray." Recognized by Essence magazine as one of the 50 most inspiring African Americans, Dyson also won the 2004 NAACP Image Award for outstanding nonfiction literary work for his Why I Love Black Women.  Another book, Open Mike: Reflections on Philosophy, Race, Sex, Culture and Religion, was a national best seller. Dyson is the author of nine additional books, including his latest, Is Bill Cosby Right?: Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?

A cutting-edge critic, Dyson draws vital links between contemporary African-American culture, hip-hop culture and American culture. He pays particular attention to the language Americans use to define themselves and others because, according to Dyson, "language reminds us that we exist at all." Dyson's other books and commentaries include Making Malcolm X, I May Not Get There with You: The Real Martin Luther King, Jr., Holler if You Hear Me, and Mercy, Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye. In addition to the named chair he currently holds at the University of Pennsylvania, Dyson has held teaching positions at distinguished colleges and universities including the Chicago Theological Seminary, Brown University, the University of North Carolina, Columbia University and DePaul University.

The Convocation and reception are sponsored by Loyola’s Office of Academic Affairs and Diversity.
