Engineering courses benefit from HP Tablet PCs

Loyola University Maryland was selected as one of 39 two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico to receive a 2008 Hewlett Packard (HP) Technology for Teaching grant, which is designed to transform teaching and improve learning in the classroom through innovative uses of technology. As part of this grant, the Loyola Department of Engineering received an award that included 21 HP Tablet PCs as well as other HP support products and a cash award.  The total value of the grant is more than $77,000.

We have integrated these HP Tablet PCs into four undergraduate engineering courses to improve student learning of engineering computation, modeling, and project management skills and tools.  The students are using the Tablets on problem-solving and project-planning exercises, and the instructors are monitoring their activities in real time to identify misconceptions and provide immediate help on trouble spots.  The instructors are also conducting class sessions using the Tablets, taking advantage of the ability to write directly on projected materials using "digital ink."

To date, four professors and over 80 students have participated in the project, which is now in its third year.
