Curriculum Vitae

BIOGRAPHY

Matt Mulcahy graduated from Macalester College in 1990, worked for two years at the National Museum of American History, and returned to the Twin Cities for graduate school.  He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1999.  His first book, Hurricanes and Society in the British Greater Caribbean, 1624-1783, was published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 2006.  A paperback edition was published in 2008.  He is currently working on a project exploring the great 1692 earthquake in Jamaica.  His first article from that research, "The Port Royal Earthquake and the World of Wonders in Seventeenth-Century Jamaica" appeared in the Fall 2008 issue of Early American Studies.  He is also working on a survey of the British West Indies and the Carolina lowcountry from 1624 until the end of the Seven Years War.  He has been chair of the department since 2007.
