History

Students study at the University College in Cork. The university was established in 1845 and today is the home campus for 15,000 students. There are over 1500 international students who attend UCC for a semester or year. Living and learning will be with Irish and/or international students. Loyola’s part-time director will be present to assist students and to coordinate special meals and organize Loyola sponsored cultural trips.

Early Start Program

Loyola students participate in the Early Start Program offered by UCC. The Early Start Program offers visiting students the ideal means of gaining an introduction to Ireland and Irish studies through a carefully guided approach to the country’s history, culture, politics and civilization. Visiting students select one of the following intensive pre-university courses for one month.

Early Start in Irish Archaeology
Early Start in Irish Folklore and Ethnology
Early Start in History and Modern Ireland
Early Start in Literatures in Ireland
Early Start in Irish Ecosystems (primarily for science majors or minors)
Early Start in Management and Marketing in the European Union
Early Start in Irish Music
Early Start in Law

Criteria for Applying

You should apply if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are a sophomore with a cumulative QPA of 3.0 or higher
  • You can find courses that fit your Loyola degree program and will allow you to register for a full-time load of courses.
  • You have no record of disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.
  • Most majors in the areas of humanities and social sciences are strongly encouraged to apply for the year. The fall only or spring only options are only for students whose majors are not offered at the university or in cases where the UCC academic department chairs may not grant permission to allow those students to take major courses within their departments. Check with the Office of International Programs for specific information.

Academics

  • Attend an information session on the Cork program
  • Consult the Office of International Programs as early as possible to get the assistance on course selections for Loyola and abroad.
  • Course module booklets for visiting students are usually available in late August / early September. Therefore, the academic interview is based on the previous year’s course offerings. Course offerings and the semesters in which those courses run are subject to change. In light of this information, we recommend that you save as many electives as possible, in the event of any major course changes.
  • Registration will take place abroad and is done during the first 2 weeks of school. Therefore, you should have as many course options as possible.

Length of Stay

  • Students depart in mid-August, a few days before the start of the Early Start program. Early Start begins in mid-August and runs for one month. Shortly after, the fall semester begins in late September and goes until mid December. Students return to the States for the Christmas break, and return in early January for the spring semester, which ends on or around June 1.

Housing / Meals

  • Year-long students live in Carragibarre Apartments. They are located approximately 10 minutes from the center of the city and approximately 10 minutes from the university. Each flat has a single bedroom and bathroom with a shared kitchen and living room area. The apartments come fully furnished.
  • Meals are not included. Students must provide for their own meals. There is a cafeteria on campus and other eateries, too. Most students cook their own meals. There is an English market in town and supermarkets.
  • Students also can find inexpensive pub food near the university.

Cost

  • Students are eligible for consideration for all forms of federal, state, institutional, and private sources of aid, with a few exceptions, like the Federal Work-Study assignment.
  • Loyola financial aid can be used on this program.
  • All students must have a comprehensive health plan, which includes hospitalization and can be used while overseas.
  • All students must have a valid passport. The passport must have at least 6 months left after the study abroad program end date.
  • Students will have to pay an Immigration Fee upon arrival. This is currently 150 Euro and is subject to increase.
  • Linens will need to be purchased. It is best to purchase them once in Ireland.
  • Students should budget for any start-up costs associated with study abroad

Benefits
This is a full package program with:

  • a part-time director
  • 2 round-trip airline tickets
  • Limited trips and a celebration meal
  • apartments with heat and utilities included
  • tuition
  • travel assistance plan with medical evacuation/repatriation coverage
  • Special Note: Students will be allowed to pre-register for courses at Loyola, provided their account is up to date.
  • Also, students using Loyola programs retain their priority for on-campus housing then they return. However, Loyola cannot guarantee any student housing when they return from abroad

Miscellaneous

  • The Student Health Office at UCC is also recommending that you get a Meningitis C shot when you arrive on campus.  Even though you might have had a Meningitis shot already, the Health Center at UCC has informed us that there is a different strain of Meningitis that is found in Ireland. It is free and provided by the Student Health Office at UCC.  It is not mandatory, but highly recommended by the Health Office at UCC. You can also consult the CDC website to help you with your decision. It is up to you whether you want to get it.

Application Requirements

  • An online application, an advisor statement and a brief essay must be submitted by December 1st of sophomore year for the year-long option in junior year.
  • All students must declare their major, and minor if applicable, prior to submitting their on-line application.
  • Undeclared majors will be turned down automatically.
