The department of modern languages and literatures offers programs of study in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. As part of its commitment to a broad-based, liberal-arts education, Loyola requires each student, regardless of their major, to demonstrate proficiency in a modern or classical foreign language through the intermediate college level. Depending on how well a student does on their placement exam, they could need anywhere from 1-4 language courses to fulfill Loyola's basic language requirement.
