Clinical & Counseling Externship Checklist
___ 3) Identify your professional interest, observing clinical and counseling externship lists, site evaluations, site web sites, etc. ___ 4) Student will need to do 2 externships (150 hours each, 10-12 hours per week). Focus on whether you want to do your externship at 2 different sites or 1 site as some sites require a 2-semester commitment. ___ 5) Survey personal experiences related to Psychology while preparing your resume. Refer to recommendations Dr. Haskins has given you in preparing a professional looking resume. Set up an appointment in the Career Development Center to meet with a career counselor for assistance. ___ 6) Refer to tips on introducing yourself on the telephone as your first contact with the site may be through your first telephone conversation. ___ 7) Schedule site interview(s). ___ 8) Your letter of offer from the site must arrive and then be approved by Dr. Haskins PRIOR to beginning the externship experience. You can not register until the Letter of Offer has been received and approved. Check with her assistant, Mrs. Casey Hofmann, at 410-617-2298 or cmhofmann@loyola.edu on status of letter arrival. ___ 9) After the letter of offer has been received and approved, you can now register for the appropriate externship. Students may not begin their externship until they are registered and the semester has begun. Students can now register on the web; only if Dr. Haskins has given approval. Please contact her assistant (noted above) to verify permission to register. As soon as a student is registered, he/she is covered by Loyola College’s professional liability insurance. ___10) As soon as the letter of offer has been received and Dr. Haskins has been given approval, you will then be receiving an information packet notifying you of the scheduled supervision meetings (6 total throughout Semester). You are required to attend every scheduled supervision meeting. Specific requirements for the Counseling and Clinical externships will be reviewed at the first supervision meeting. ___11) Supervisor Learning Contract due before 1st externship meeting. (Contract will be included in information packet.) ___12) Attend 1st externship supervision meeting, receive semester syllabus, textbook requirements from group supervisor. ___13) Purchase required textbook. Note: 702/731 and 703/732 require different textbooks. ___14) It is expected that you will read material assigned for field education to be reviewed by Dr. Haskins and emailed to her at dhaskins@loyola.edu by the identified due dates. ___15) Counseling externship students will be required to keep a journal for which due date will be identified in externship syllabus. ___16) Clinical externship students will be required to record time and tasks completed on the clinical logs. These logs are due by the 5th of each succeeding month. Logs must reflect a minimum of 150 hours total per externship, including a minimum of 75 hours of testing activities and a minimum of 35-40 hours of direct assessment activities with clients. ___17) The supervisor from the externship site is responsible for a final evaluation and grade of the extern. It is the responsibility of the extern to notify and remind the supervisor that an evaluation and grade must be submitted to Dr. Haskins at the end of the semester. ___18) At the end of the semester, students are asked to complete two evaluations:
