Joshua D. Hendrick

Joshua D. Hendrick is excited to join the Department of Sociology at Loyola University of Maryland in the fall of 2011.  Joshua earned his PhD in sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2009 and his M.A. is socio-cultural anthropology from Northern Arizona University in 2001.  He received a B.A. in anthropology and a B.A. in religious studies from the University of Georgia in 1999. For his dissertation, Joshua conducted eleven months of field research in Turkey and the US where he focused on the discursive and organizational strategies of Turkish Islamic activism.  "Globalization, Islamic Activism, and Passive Revolution in Turkey: the case of Fethullah Gulen" was recently published in the Journal of Political Power.

In addition to his work in Middle Eastern Studies and faith-based social movements, Joshua also has a sincere interest in issues of sustainability, appropriate technology, and green innovations in regard to community development.  He has conducted research on these topics in the United States, Turkey, and Belize, Central America.   His personal and extracurricular interests include backpacking, fishing, gardening, and cooking.  He is moving to Baltimore, MD with his wife, Leah (married August 13, 2011), their two dogs, “Hopi Dog” and “Greta,” and the cat, “Kedi.”

Joshua has taught sociology and international studies courses at the University of Oregon, Portland State University, and the University of California, Santa Cruz.  At Loyola University, Joshua will regularly teach SOC102, Societies and Institutions, as well as a number of other courses in sociology and global studies.  In addition to teaching SOC102, in the fall of 2011 Joshua will teach an upper division course on Modern Islamic Social Movements.
