- Deepening Our Understanding of the Child with Special Needs: Autism and ADD/ADHD (for Administrators, Teachers and Assistants) with Nora McNamara, M.D., Child Psychiatrist and AMI Montessorian
Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are developmental conditions frequently encountered in educational settings, affecting up to 1.5% and 5% of school age children, yet neither of these were even described when Dr. Montessori developed the Montessori method. This workshop will explore the histories, the known and unknown contributing factors/etiologies, some of the frequently observed behaviors across the four planes of development, and some of the standard/validated therapies and medical and psychological therapies. This experience will also introduce talking to parents about developmental concerns, how to provide support for children with these neurodivergent presentations in a Montessori environment, and how to work collaboratively with other professionals in the context of your classroom community to benefit the identified students as well as the entire student community.
Dr. McNamara respectfully asks that this workshop not include discussions about real and particular children in your lives, whether they are your own children or children in your Montessori environments so as to protect the children's right to privacy. She also encourages attendees to bring any handwork they might like to be able to fully engage their calm intellects, and their loudest and most enthusiastic singing voices to share a song or two. She can't wait to see all of you! She hopes that this workshop will be useful for Montessori professionals working across all the planes and at any point in their own development as a Prepared Adult.
Nora McNamara MD is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist currently working at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. She teaches and sees patients and is the principal investigator on industry-sponsored clinical trials for children with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and early-onset mood disorders and is the site principal investigator for a multi-center longitudinal study sponsored by the NIH which is currently its 9th year. She graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1994. She is also a parent to two former Montessori students, and in 2009 took a sabbatical year to pursue AMI Elementary training at the Hershey Montessori Institute. Since graduating, she continues to work as a Child and adolescent Psychiatrist, but has added advocacy for all children to experience Montessori education to her job description, because she knows that this is the best environment for all children.
