ASEE Mid-Atlantic Section News

Chairman’s Corner

As the chair of the Middle Atlantic Section, it is my great pleasure and honor to extend warm greetings on behalf of the American society of Engineering education.

As engineering and technology educators, you play an important role in training the technology leaders of the next millennium. The rapidly changing character of the world's global communities has placed additional burdens on you to provide students with the broad spectrum of educational experiences necessary for their future.

I am confident, through active participation in societies such as ASEE; we can increase the educational experience for students. I invite you to give your time freely to our Mid-Atlantic Section activities of ASEE.

Our immediate past chair of Mid-Atlantic Section, Colonel Tom Lenox retired for the USMA and has joined the American Society of Civil Engineers as the director of educational activities. Let us wish Tom success in all his endeavors.

Dr. Art Murphy (DuPont) has joined our executive committee as an advisory member.

Professor Henry Zimmer, our meetings' committee chair has been active in arranging the following future meetings for our section, in collaboration with Professor Dennis Silage, our previous meeting committee's chair.

As you can see from this list, our schedule of future meetings is beginning to fill out. If your institution is interested in hosting a Middle Atlantic Section meeting, please contact me or our Meetings Committee Chair (Dennis Silage, silage@vm.temple.edu) for more information. A section meeting is a splendid opportunity to bring engineering educators to your campus or industrial site, and promote your institution and its programs. Hosting a section meeting is a visible display of your institution’s support of engineering education.

Professors Ahmed Rubaai and Gajanan Sabnis have been active in arranging a very interesting Fall 1998 meeting at Howard University in Washington DC. I invite you to attend the meeting and also encourage your colleagues and students to attend. ASEE will pay for registration expenses for a maximum of four students to attend this meeting in Washington D.C. If there are any students you would like to bring along, please apply early for this free registration opportunity by calling me at (718)-260-5525.

Last year, Colonel Tom Lenox declared the year as "Mentor a Member". This year I am making the theme "Bring a Member and a Student to our Meetings". Kindly tell your colleagues and students about the excellent program at Howard University, "Engineering Education without Boundaries". The conference fee of $70.00 includes a reception and banquet on the evening of Friday November 6, 1998. Look for the list of executive committee members and their contact numbers for your information and benefit.

Looking forward to seeing you at Howard on November 6, 1998.

-Sankar Sastri, Section Chair

Letter From the Editor:

We are trying to keep things "short and sweet" in this issue as it is chock full of pertinent information. Remember to look for the following items.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we will continue to communicate with the membership primarily through a newsletter and the US Mail. A rudimentary section web page is here – check it out at www.loyola.edu/asee. It can also be accessed from the ASEE national site, www.asee.org, and looking under membership and then sections. Your comments on the page and its usefulness are greatly appreciated!

Remember communication is a two-way street. You can send comments and suggestions to my e-mail address at keilson@loyola.edu or "snail mail" address at Loyola College, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Engineering Science, 4501 North Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210.

The Successful Spring 1998 Conference at the College of New Jersey

The beautiful Hillwood Lakes campus at The College of New Jersey provided the perfect setting for the April 25, 1998 Regional Conference of the Middle Atlantic Section. Co-hosting duties were shared by the Department of Engineering and the ASME student chapter of The College of New Jersey for this year's well-attended event. The theme of "Re-engineering Engineering Education", deservedly attracted a large number of educators from all engineering disciplines as well as administrators and industrial professionals.

Friday evening, prior to the day-long conference, the business meeting and dinner for the Executive Committee of the section was held at The College of New Jersey Conference Center. Topics concerning the business agenda for the section were covered in detail.

The day of the Conference got off to a great start when the one hundred and four participants turned out on a sunny Saturday morning to enjoy the opening ceremonies with a breakfast and receive a welcome address form President Harold Eickhoff. The morning program that followed consisted of two general sessions ("Ethics in Engineering" and "Expectations of Engineering Education") and a section business meeting.

Having attended a very full and informative morning's schedule and the chance to visit with the seven vendors who had displayed their most current educational products, the participants were now able to take a mid-day break for a luncheon. Mr. Richard Araa, Vice President of Aerospace/Communication Division of ITT, provided the luncheon keynote address titled "What Industry Would Like New Engineering Graduates to Know".

The afternoon session found the participants in Armstrong Hall where they attended three parallel sessions ("Bold New Changes in Engineering Technology Education", "Innovations in Engineering Education", and "The First Year Experience in Engineering Education"). Participants had the chance to examine several outstanding senior project activities and an engineering laboratory display in Professor Bijan Sepahpour's mechanical and devices laboratory. The Spring 1998 conference was officially drawn to an old fashioned close, College of New Jersey style, with an ice cream social. The event was "engineered" so that no participant left hungry.

Award Nominations:

Distinguished Teaching Award

The ASEE Middle Atlantic Section is committed to excellence in the instruction of engineering and engineering technology students and annually recognizes an outstanding engineering or engineering technology teacher from the section.

The Award: The annual award, presented at the Spring meeting of the section, consists of a $250 honorarium, a certificate of recognition and a section paid registration to the meeting at which the presentation is made.

Qualifications: Candidates must be members of the ASEE Middle Atlantic Section who teach any subject included in an accredited engineering or engineering technology degree. In addition to engineering courses, the subjects may include mathematics, science and other required subjects in engineering and technology curricula. The award recipient must agree to attend the Spring meeting at which the award is presented. Otherwise, the award will be given to the next highest ranked candidate who agrees to attend. Exceptions will be made for emergency circumstances.

The teacher as an individual should have a broad and accurate knowledge of his or her field and possess a sense of proportion, stressing fundamentals at the expense of trivial details. Teachers should challenge their students with assignments that stimulate interest and enthusiasm for the subject while requiring thought for completion. Teachers should be active counselors for their students before graduation and be available and willing to provide counseling for their former students after graduation.

The teacher’s contributions to the profession should include course, curriculum and laboratory development and the sharing of these accomplishments through conference presentations and journal article publications.

Nomination: Any member of the section may nominate candidates for this award by preparing a nomination package that must include a nomination form, a citation (100, or fewer, word statement highlighting major accomplishments), a nomination rationale statement (not to exceed 750 words), a curriculum vitae, and evidence of accomplishments. Supporting letters from colleagues and former students are recommended to strengthen the nomination but are not required.
