First Year Living-Learning Communities
Student Life, in conjunction with the Dean of First Year Students, offers three, first year Living-Learning Communities. For each of our communities, students take at least one class with other students who live in their residential community. The three communities include:
COLLEGIUM The Collegium program is a living-learning community of 72 students who live in a suite style community in Campion Tower with classmates in two of their academic classes. Students in the Collegium program learn collaboratively; sharing questions about study methods and challenging each other’s intellectual assumptions and abilities. This ready-made community provides support, friendship and intellectual companionship for each student thus enhancing their experience at Loyola College and helps them to feel “at home” soon after they arrive. In addition, Collegium members are enrolled in a First-Year Experience course (FE 100). Students participating in the program have the opportunity to use and develop their leadership skills by organizing social and cultural activities on campus and in Baltimore. ALPHA HOUSE Alpha House is comprised of students enrolled in an Alpha Class during their first semester at college who want to live with other students enrolled in the Alpha Program (although not necessarily in their actual Alpha Class). This allows students to meet students with a variety of academic interests. Community features include monthly Jesuit reflection dinners, trips sponsored by the Dean of First Year students and out of class activities with Alpha Faculty members. Students can choose to live in Double or suite style room options. THE FE 100 LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE The FE 100 Leadership Experience is committed to identifying, developing and encouraging leadership among members of the first year class while living together in community. Students who enroll in the Leadership Experience will be housed together on a floor in Flannery O'Connor Hall (formerly East Residence Hall) and will be all take a FE 100 class that places a special emphasis on exploring the topic of leadership. In-class conversation will be enhanced by out of class activities sponsored by the RA and FE 100 instructors. Other community features include: Opportunities to meet and talk to upper-class student leaders about their experiences at Loyola Leadership Programs held in conjunction with the Office of Leadership and New Student Programs such as the Emerging Student Leaders Conference, Leadership Week and Leadership Resource Center Open House Days. A Weekend Getaway in January with members of the Leadership community to reconnect with each other after Winter break, discuss personal leadership strengths and look ahead to getting involved at Loyola.
Note: While over 200 students enroll in FE 100, there are only 32 spaces available in the LeadershipExperience, so interested students should sign up now!
Students interested in living in these communities must sign- up online at www.loyola.edu/fyp before coming to summer orientation. |
