Understanding Haiti Speaker Series

Spiritual Reflections from Medical Professionals
Elizabeth Sloand, PhD, CRNP & Dr. Mychelle Farmer, MD

Dr. Sloand is an assistant professor for the Department of Acute & Chronic Care at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She has traveled to Haiti numerous times for medical missons with her students. After the earthquake she traveled back to Haiti to respond to the needs of Haitians.

Dr. Farmer is a pediatrician with the Catholic Relief Services. Dr. Sloand & Dr. Farmer will discuss what they saw and experienced as medical professionals in Haiti.

The presentation will take place on Monday, April 26, 2010 in Cohn Hall 33 from 1:00pm-2:30pm.

Dr. Schneider recounts her experience in Haiti as a pediatrician days after the earthquake. She and her team of Johns Hopkins pediatric residents are back in Haiti caring for children after a short stay in the United States.

Dr. Holc is a professor in the political science department at Loyola. She specializes in Eastern European politics and has taught International Relations and American Foreign Policy in the past. Dr. Holc will discuss the political and economic effects of the devastation in Haiti.

Dr.Tellis is the co-founder of the Center for Microfinance Advice and Consulting which helps self-sustaining businesses operate in developing countries. He was honored for his work with the poor in Haiti by Fonkoze USA which operates the only alternative bank in Haiti.
