Spring Break Outreach Participant Application Form

SBO 2013 Mission Statement

Through learning about and experiencing social justice issues, SBO 2013 participants will develop an understanding of, and respect for self, others, and community partners.  Participants will learn what it means to serve and to be present with those whom they encounter.  Participants will also recognize created societal barriers and advocate for those who are marginalized by those barriers.

1. Please list any CCSJ ongoing or one-time service and/or immersion programs in which you have participated (not required for participation).
2. Are you authorized to drive Loyola vehicles for the current academic year? (not a requirement for participation)
3. Please rank the top three issues (sites) that interest you this year.
(If you would be open to visiting any of the sites, please mark just “Any site.”)
Please note that there is additional airfare cost for some sites (*)
We are offering 8 sites for SBO 2013. Each site focuses on a different area of service. If you are accepted into the program, we will place you in one of your top three site choices.
4. As an SBO participant, you also need to make a commitment to abide by expectations regarding behavior in the local community, safety, and sensitivity towards our hosts. Specifically, you need to know that the SBO immersion experience in the local host site is alcohol and drug free; will you agree to abide by this policy?
If you are accepted you will sign a Behavioral Agreement that talks about these expectations; please be sure to read it carefully.
6. You have the choice of completing written essay questions or an interview for your SBO application.

PART TWO
This concludes PART ONE. The following essay questions are PART TWO (only for those who have elected to submit a written application).
Please write at least one paragraph for each question.
Bear in mind we consider both the quality, thoroughness, and thoughtfulness of your answers as we make decisions about acceptance and placement.
(1) What aspect(s) of SBO do you expect might be the most challenging for you and why?
(2) Tell us about your involvement with community service.
• What types of community service projects have you participated in either in high school or college, and what did you learn from your involvement?
• What questions or issues were raised for you?
• If you haven’t participated in community service, please tell us about other experiences or extracurricular activities that you have been involved in that have heightened your interest in community service or in social justice issues
(3) How would you be an asset to your SBO team? What would you contribute as a member of your group?
(4) Describe an experience in which you stepped outside of your comfort zone. How did you respond and what did you learn?
(5) SBO involves a significant time committment, including 4-5 preparation meetings before spring break, 3 full program meetings, 2 site meetings after spring break, and Advocacy Day in the spring.
What are your other commitments and activities on and off campus this year?
