Project Mexico Established in 1987, the Project Mexico program provides students with an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in a 10-day intense service and educational exchange with peoples and communities of Tijuana, Tecate, and Mexicali, Mexico. Students selected for this program commit to a full year of activities. In the fall semester, the team meets weekly for team building, preparation and education. Fund raising is vital to maintain the program and the participants do individual fundraising with family, friends and personal connections. The primary source for raising funds is through the Project Mexico Auction, held in November. This is a major Loyola tradition which engages the entire university campus.
The 2009 Project Mexico Auction will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 4 - 8 p.m. in McGuire Hall. Click here to see this year's Auction booklet During their stay in Mexico, Loyola’s team of 20 sophomores, juniors and seniors along with 3 faculty/administrator/staff members, participate in community directed construction projects, commonly centered on schools, as well as other community prjoects. They also engage in cultural and social activities and education programs to engage topics such as immigration, the environment, human rights and political and economic issues. The program also emphasizes personal reflection on the Mexico experience and its impact on one's personal and spiritual development. This reflection encourages the participant to think and feel critically about the reality they experience and to integrate it into their future life choices.
