S.B.O. (Spring Break Outreach) Application Process and Forms PLEASE NOTE that a couple of significant changes are occurring in SBO this year. For the first time, the SBO program will accept a pre-determined number of participants (95). In the past few years the program has grown rapidly, in large part due to the enthusiastic response of students to the need for volunteers in the Gulf Coast. We have learned, however, that it is possible to grow to a size where it is impossible to assure the same level of quality and care that participants have come to expect. Thus we have determined the maximum number of students that we can accept on the program this year and regrettably, we may need to not accept some applicants. This means that additional importance will be placed on the quality of participant applications and interviews this year. We will be looking for applicants who are undeniably committed to and invested in the mission and goals of SBO, and who are poised to learn and grow from the experience. If you want to improve your chances of being accepted, think carefully about why you are interested in this program, and convey it clearly in your application and interview. Please remember that no prior community service experience is necessary; although always helpful, that is not a pre-requisite for this program. We want people who are committed to learning through service—whether or not you have done community service before. If you are interested in one of the Gulf Coast sites (which, you will notice have been listed as one site on this application), you will be asked a few additional questions in the interview. Also, the site fee will be $50 higher for the Gulf Coast participants to cover the significantly higher transportation costs to the area. Lastly, after numerous years of holding the Participant Fee constant, we need to increase the fee this year. The new fee will be $150 for participants in Baltimore, Camden, Fries, Ivanhoe, Newark and Washington D.C., and $200 for Gulf Coast participants. This slight increase in fee will reduce the stress on participants to raise funds through letter-writing and other activities. Application Process
