How to incorporate Justice and Service into your life?

At Loyola, our goal of further developing "men and women for and with others" includes helping students to incorporate service into their lives after graduation. There are many ways to do this: some choose to work in a nonprofit agency, some may accept a full time job in their field while doing voluntary service on the side, and some might consider spending a year or two in a full time service program.

Why Service after graduation? You give and you get. The chance to make a real difference in other people's lives and work for justice is the reason most students choose to continue service. There are also the practical benefits that can help students further their education and define career goals. Combined, it is an experience to draw on for the rest of one’s life - both personally and professionally.

Opportunities in fulltime service can allow graduates to live in a different region of the country, learn a new language, develop leadership skills, open the doors to graduate school, discern a path in life or build lasting friendships with people who share the common interests of service and justice. The service programs and opportunities available have grown in scope and richness over the past decade. Whether one’s interest is in a faith-based or secular community, a communal or independent program, serving for a few months to a couple of years, in settings close to home or on the other side of the globe, there is likely a program or service opportunity to match one’s interest.

Choosing to work in a non-profit agency or serve at a community agency while working full-time is another meaningful way to continue service after graduation. Many of Loyola’s students have gone on to work full time or volunteer in agencies that seek justice and serve people who are in need. Please visit our "Stories from recent Graduates" website to read the experience of those who participate in fulltime service or continue to work in the area of service and justice.

Working in a full-time position allows graduates a chance to explore the possibility of a career in life-long service. Continuing voluntary service can help graduates immerse themselves in their new communities and build upon their service experiences at Loyola. Feel free to visit our  "After Graduate Service Exploration Guide" before you start deciding which service program to join.

The other way of incorporate justice and service into your life is to be conscious of your daily spending simply by engaging in philantrophy and socially responsible giving.

The Center for Community Service and Justice offers resources and support to students as they consider service options upon graduation. We welcome students interested to explore our resources on post college service or to simply talk with CCSJ staff.
