May 12-15 and Aug. 25, 2008 Registration forms due Monday, March 31, 2008 (see below for more information). The Service-Learning and Engaged Scholarship Faculty Fellows Seminar at Loyola College is an opportunity to learn about service-learning pedagogy and integrate it into an appropriate course in the company of friends and colleagues from a number of departments. Faculty Fellows: - investigate the theories and models of learning behind service-learning;
- discover its successful integration into their own disciplines and courses at colleges and universities nationally and internationally;
- explore syllabi and principles of good practice by prominent leaders in their fields and academe;
- engage in a comprehensive look at structured reflection and its role in service-learning pedagogies;
- inquire into methodologies of assessment and evaluation;
- learn about the power of community partnerships; and
- review the ‘nuts and bolts’ of teaching service-learning courses at Loyola.
Seminar Meeting Times and Dates (May 12th-15th and August 25th) Fellows meet together at the end of spring semester during the week prior to Commencement (May 12th-15th) for three half-days and one full-day, and reconvene at the end of summer on August 25th for one full-day seminar. Half-day seminars (May 12th, 13th, 15th) begin at 9am and end at 12 noon (breakfast is provided); full-day seminars (Wednesday, May 14th, and August 25th) begin at 9am and end at 3pm (breakfast and lunch are provided). Seminar Readings and Integration Project Fellows receive a complimentary set of readings, which serve to guide seminar conversations and individual inquiry. In addition, each Fellow commits t (a) integrating service-learning into one course and teaching it once during the coming year; and (b) serving as a departmental mentor and advocate for service-learning. Following the week of May 12-15th, Fellows have the rest of the summer to work individually on their service-learning Integration Projects. During the last seminar meeting at the end of August, Fellows present their service-learning courses and syllabi to one another and invite constructive review and feedback from their colleagues in the seminar. Among other things, the Integration Project requires Fellows to understand basic criteria for service-learning courses, select an appropriate course, develop learning objectives for service-learning in the course, identify appropriate community partners (agencies, schools, businesses), and integrate service-learning (including structured reflection, evaluation, and assessment procedures) into the syllabus. Megan Linz Dickinson and Robin Crews are happy to assist Fellows in their efforts over the summer and during the academic year.
