Immigration Events
The 2009 Colloquium on Language, Literature, and Society will focus on the immigrant experience. Scholars and practicing artists will illuminate both the physical and emotional disruptions brought on by relocation as well as the expression of issues of personal and cultural identity in literature. Once again, Immigrants and Advocates have a tremendous opportunity to fight for justice for immigrants in Annapolis. This year, the legislative agenda appears longer than ever, with record numbers of anti-immigrant proposals and ever increasing public spotlight being placed on these bills. Some of out priority issues this year in Annapolis will be: - Maintaining access to driver's licenses for immigrants
- In-state tuition for immigrant students
- Increased penalties for employers who commit wage theft
- Defending against a variety of anti-immigrant proposals, including English-Only and anti-Santuary City proposals
These will all be hot-button issues this year in Annapolis, and we need to speak with a strong, unified voice! Join us this year for Immigration Action Night in Annapolis, on Monday, February 23rd to meet with legislators and speak about these issues, followed by a rally on Lawyer's Mall outside the State House. Buses will be leaving various points around Baltimore area at 3:30 and 4 p.m.; we encourage attendees to ride the bus to avoid traffic and parking delays, but if you're driving seperately, you can meet us at Lawyer's Mall at 5:30 p.m.
ISN invites the Ignatian family to attend a three-day learning experience exploring immigration through the lens of human dignity and personal experience in order to discuss and reflect on the following questions: - How are students actively engaged in justice for immigrants today?
- What is the process of citizenship, and what barriers do immigrants encounter?
- What legislative strategies or advocacy efforts can improve the quality of life for migrant families living in the United States?
- How can the Ignatian family accompany the immigrant community?
- What practical tools can we offer in order to enact change?
The Teach-In will be followed by a day of action, which seeks to opens up new avenues of communication and advocacy on the national immigration issue, as well as provide the necessary skills for student groups to carry on this work in their home communities long after the Teach-In has ended.
