The Classics Department
Regrettably, sabbatical leaves make us unable in Fall 2005 to run Interpretor. We will widely announce a call for enteries when we resume the contest. If you have any questions please contact Professor Taylor at (410) 617-2636. Fall 2000 witnessed the auspicious inauguration of Loyola's Classical Literary Translation Contest. We received over one hundred and fifty translations of classical poetry and prose submitted by high school students from across the country. The response since then has been gratifying and the competition stiff - picking winners from among the many worthy entries is in every year a difficult but rewarding task. As both faculty and students we extend our thanks to the students who sent in the fruit of their labors, and to the teachers who encouraged these efforts. The submissions for 2002 and 2003 were likewise of high quality, and each year brings us more entries than the previous. In 2003 over 250 students from schools in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Connecticutt, Massachusetts, the Disctrict of Columbia, Virginia, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and California participated. We congratulate those who performed with distinction: Students | TEACHERS & SCHOOLS | Eliz. THE DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS AND THE DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES AT LOYOLA COLLEGE IN MARYLAND invite you to participate in the Loyola College Classical Literary Translation Contest. The competition recognizes two high-school students for excellence in literary translation of a prepared passage of Latin or Greek prose or poetry of their choice. A joint faculty-student committee will judge the submissions. ENTRIES Send three copies of a polished and elegant literary translation of a passage of Latin or Greek prose or poetry of your choice. The passage should be at least 15 lines and not more than 30 lines long. Include with your translation a copy of the ancient text your are rendering into English (with a copy of the title-page of the edition used). Be sure also to include your name, address, and the name of your high school, and the name of your high school Latin teacher. PRIZES The author of the best translation will receive a $500 prize. The runner-up will receive a $100 prize. Both first and second place winners will receive a certificate recognizing their achievement and a copy of a book on the ancient world. 13 "Honorable Mentions" will each receive a $25 gift certificate. GUIDELINES Entries will be judged primarily on style and elegance, on their effectiveness in conveying not just the meaning but the nuances, subtleties and flavor of the original. For this reason, students in all levels of the ancient languages are encouraged to enter. The contest will take into account facility with English and the art of translation as much as ability in Latin or Greek. Because the contest involves prepared passages of translation, students may enter passages of Latin or Greek originals translated for class and subsequently thoroughly revised and polished for submission to the contest. You may use any and all aids in your submission but should not base your rendering on another published translation. Only one entry is permitted per student. SEND YOUR TRANSLATION, postmarked not later than October 25 to Martha C. Taylor Chair, Department of Classics Loyola College in Maryland, 4501 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210-2699. Winners will be notified by mid- December. For questions or more information, contact Martha Taylor at 410-617-2636 or MTaylor@loyola.edu. |
