Classics Department Fall 2008 Student News This semester one of our junior majors, Kimmi Quintano, is studying with the Loyola program in Rome, Italy. One of our senior majors, Nathan Zawie, returns to Loyola after participating in the summer session
at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Junior major, Caitlin Engler, and senior major, Nathan Zawie, recently presented a paper at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States, held in Princeton, New Jersey.
They performed "Jesuit Latin Drama: Stratolces, or War" as part of the paper session "Scholarship on the Horizon: Undergraduate Research in Classical Studies". Professor Thomas McCreight
assisted in the project. Spring 2008 Faculty News! Congratulations to Professor Walsh, who was recently awarded the nation's highest teaching award for teaching Classics at the college level. Student News This semester one of our junior majors, Nathan Zawie, is studying at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, Italy. Junior major, Nathan Zawie, has been accepted into the summer session at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. This is a distinguished achievement for an undergraduate. Nate has recently won a summer study grant from Loyola's Center for Humanities so he can take advantage of this unusual opportunity. Congratulations, Nate! A group of majors in Classics won first prize in the Humanities Division of the Undergraduate Research colloqium on Fri. Apr. 2. They presented their work of the last year in translating and annnotating Stratocles or War. This play, written in Latin in various versions between 1578 and 1590, was written by the Jesuit scholar Jacobus Pontanus. Pontanus, among his other achievements, was important in developing the Ratio Studiorum or the Official Plan of Jesuit Education that has continued to be the foundational document of university instruction in Jesuit schools. The play has never before been translated into English, and it will appear later in 2008 in Loyola's own Aperio series published by Apprentice House. The students involved in the presentation were: Cailin Allender, Michael Campitelli, Caitlin Engler, Richard Gibbons, Irene Murphy. Congratulations on a job well done! Rebecca Cureton, who will be studying abroad in Newcastle next year, has won a summer study grant from Loyola's Center for Humanities to study Shakespearean acting this summer in England. Fall 2007 Faculty News! Professor Martha Taylor is back from her sabbatical. She spent the 2006-2007 academic year working on a book on Thucydides. Professor Daniella Widdows has left for another job after three successful years. We wish her luck in her new post as Assistant Professor of Classics at Hampden-Sydney College. William Short has joined our faculty as Visiting Assistant Professor. Student News Several upper-level Latin students are taking part in "Pontanus: Jesuit Latin Drama on War and Peace." Under the guidance of Professor Thomas McCreight, they will be translating Stratocles sive Bellum, a play composed by the Jesuit Jacobus Pontanus. Once translated and annotated, the students' collaborative work will be published by Apprentice House, the country's only campus-based, student-staffed book publishing company. Spring 2007

Faculty News! Professor Martha Taylor is on leave the academic year 2006-07, working on a book on Thucydides. Faculty News! Daniel Holmes from the University of Virginia has joined our faculty. He will be teaching several classes of introductory and intermediate Latin and Greek this year. Professor Thomas McCreight will be on leave for the academic year 2004-05, working on a book on Apuleius. Student News Two of the department's students, one major and one minor in the class of 2005, were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Congratulations to Treasa Beyer and Alyssa Newton. Alyssa will be continuing her studies in Classics at the post-baccalaureate program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A major and a minor, Lauren Cox and Daniel Hahesy, were inducted into Eta Sigma Phi, as was Alyssa Newton. Daniel will be continuing his education in Classics in the Latin M.A. program at Boston College. Faculty News! Daniella Widdows from USC has joined our faculty. She will be teaching several classes of introductory and intermediate Latin and Greek this year. Professor Robert Miola is on leave this fall, working on a book on the Catholic Renaissance. He has a prestigious fellowship at the Folger Shakespeare library in Washington, D.C. Congratulations! Professor Joseph Walsh will be on leave in the spring, working on a book on the reception of the Classics in Victorian Europe, especially England. Student News One of the department's majors in the class of 2004, also a member of Eta Sigma Phi, was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Congratulations to Michael Vincze.
