Formal commencement ceremonies are held each year in May. Only students who have completed all degree requirements with a minimum cum G.P.A. of 2.000 are allowed to participate. Please be aware that the cumulative G.P.A. is used for determining honors at graduation and includes the grades for all courses taken at all colleges attended. No higher honors are awarded than those earned at Loyola.
Stated below is the Loyola University policy for participation in the May commencement ceremony. All students must complete forty (three or four credit) courses with a minimum of 120 credits and must satisfy all other degree requirements in order to graduate:
- A student who enters the last semester of the senior year registered for fewer courses than are needed to satisfy all requirements will not be permitted to participate in commencement.
- A student who enters the last semester of the senior year registered for all the courses that are required for the degree will not be permitted to participate if he/she withdraws from one or more courses during that semester, or if he/she fails a course required for the degree during that semester.
- A student who fails to obtain a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.000 at the end of the spring semester will not be permitted to participate in commencement.
- A student who has any incomplete grades at the end of the spring semester will not be permitted to participate in commencement.
Thus, a senior who enters the spring semester enrolled in fewer courses than needed to graduate should not make personal and/or family plans to take part in the graduation ceremony. Similarly, a senior who withdraws from a needed class in the last semester term will not be allowed to take part in commencement and should cancel personal and/or family plans for attendance.
If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the Academic Advising and Support Center, Maryland Hall 138, 410-617-5050.
Graduation Clearance Process
During the summer prior to senior year, all students should verify their remaining course requirements by reviewing their degree audit on Web Advisor. The degree audit lists all of the courses that the student has completed as well as additional courses needed during senior year in order to fulfill all of Loyola's requirements for May graduation. These requirements include 40 three- or four-credit courses and 120 credits. Students should contact AASC to schedule an appointment with the administrator who will be clearing them for graduation if the student has any questions regarding his/her remaining course requirements.
To schedule an appointment with an AASC administrator, call 410-617-5050.
Honors at Graduation
The cumulative QPA is used for determining honors at graduation or any other academic honors. Although the grades for all courses taken at all colleges attended are included, no higher honors are awarded than those earned with grades that appear on the Loyola transcript for courses completed at Loyola or through Loyola sponsored programs. If transfer courses have grades that lower the QPA, they are used in computing the QPA.
To receive honors at graduation, students must have a cumulative grade point average as follows:
- Summa cum laude = 3.800
- Magna cum laude = 3.700
- Cum laude = 3.500
