Faculty Development and Diversity

"The function of the university is not simply to teach bread-winning, or to furnish teachers for the public schools or to be a centre of polite society; it is, above all, to be the organ of that fine adjustment between real life and the growing knowledge of life, an adjustment which forms the secret of civilization.”
- W. E. B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk, 1903

Welcome! This webpage connects you to various ways the Office of Academic Affairs supports faculty development in teaching, scholarship, service, inclusive campus climate, and work-life balance.

As your Faculty Development Fellow, I am a member of the Academic Affairs leadership team whose role is to coordinate faculty development opportunities across the career cycle, foster diversity and inclusion initiatives, liaise with affinity groups, and serve as a resource for best practices in faculty hiring and retention. I believe faculty are at the heart of academic institutions and I am excited to do my part to nurture a productive and diverse intellectual community at Loyola. You can find out more about me at my personal webpage.

Check out the full calendar of opportunities sponsored by Academic Affairs or in partnership with various offices on campus. Many are open to all faculty, some are specific to certain ranks or stages in the career cycle. I want to call your attention in particular to some of the ongoing Spotlight Initiatives in the right column.

Feel free to contact me anytime. Better yet, stop by Beatty Hall 204 and check out the Faculty Development center, which includes a small meeting space and library on development and diversity.

I look forward to working with you!

Brian Norman, Ph.D.
