Graduate Assistant for Sophomore and Transition Programs

Hours & Wages

Period of Employment

The dates for this assistantship are June 1, 2014 through May 31, 2015. There will be the opportunity for a 2nd year of employment, contingent on performance.

 Hours

Position requires an average of 20 hours per week, including significant evening and/or weekend hours at times. This totals to a yearly commitment of approximately 1000 hours.

 Remuneration

This position offers a $16,500 total annual compensation, with up to 60% of that as tuition remission and 40% as a stipend. The graduate assistant will work with Student Administrative Services to decide on the best payment allocation depending on students tuition coverage needs.

Scope

The Office of Student Engagement, which consists of transition programs, sophomore year initiatives, and leadership and civic engagement, aims to address the developmental needs of students in transition, deepen students’ understanding of principles of a Jesuit education, and promote the development of ethical and civic minded leaders and community members. The Graduate Assistant will assist the Director and Assistant Director(s) in planning, implementing, and execution of the engagement programs and resources, including but not limited to retreats, workshops, and social/spiritual events. The Graduate Assistant for Sophomore and Transition Programs will focus primarily on sophomore year initiatives, which center on reflection, social connection, and life direction.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills
  • Proficiency at planning, marketing, and running events
  • Personable demeanor and ability to connect with students
  • Experience with facilitating group discussions and leading icebreaker activities
  • Comfort presenting to an audience of twenty to fifty students
  • Flexibility and adaptability in the face of uncertainty and change
  • A sense of humor and positive energy!

Desired Qualifications

  • Understanding of the importance of reflection and discernment
  • Understanding of Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit values
  • Awareness of significant transitions and experiences during sophomore year
  • Familiarity and experience with social media such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Experience with learning outcomes and program assessment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Publisher, Word, and Outlook

Responsibilities 

  1. Oversee the planning and implementation of the SophoMORE Supper program

    • Coordinate all logistics of the program, including but not limited to room reservations, catering, and student registration
    • Oversee the nomination, solicitation, and selection of students
    • Select and orient the faculty, administrator, or Jesuit presenter at each Suppers
    • Oversee the presentation and facilitate the group discussion at each Supper
    • Conduct assessment during each Supper’s evaluation period
  2. Oversee the planning and implementation of SophoMORE Workshops throughout the year
    • Oversee all logistics of each Workshop, including but not limited to the room reservations, student sign-in, and announcements
    • Coordinate the development and distribution of marketing and outreach  for each Workshop
    • Solicit collaboration from other departments and offices to present content at each Workshop
    • Conduct outcome-based assessment during each Workshop’s evaluation period
  3. Serve as a mentor for the Ad Infinitum sophomore community’s Advisory Council
    • Assist in the solicitation, selection, training, and retention of Advisory Council members
    • Schedule, direct, and facilitate monthly Advisory Council meetings
    • Attend and participate in Ad Infinitum events, including but not limited to the September retreat, monthly Community Nights, and End of Year Banquet
  4.  Assist in class-wide outreach and communication to the sophomore class
    • Oversee sophomore student enrollment in Student Engagement Network e-mail distribution lists
    • Direct the creation and distribution of the bimonthly SophoMORE Spotlight newsletter
    • Coordinate the design, printing, and distribution of SophoMORE Year Experience t-shirts
  5.  Assist in the preparation and coordination of RoadTrip
    • Attend and participate in RoadTrip weekend, January 9-11, 2015
    • Assist in coordinating various logistics prior to and during RoadTrip
    • Coordinate icebreakers and fun/social activities for participants during RoadTrip weekend
    • Assist with student leader training throughout fall semester as needed
  6. Assist with transition-related Student Engagement programming
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of SophoMORE Week in September
    • Attend and facilitate the connections between students on Mystery Bus trips
    • Assist with elements of Summer and Fall Orientation
  7. Other duties as assigned
    • While this Graduate Assistant position primarily assists with sophomore year programming efforts, all staff members are expected to provide assistance in supporting the mission and meeting the goals of the Office of Student Engagement.
    • Graduate Assistant is encouraged to be creative and new ideas for programs and opportunities are highly encouraged and supported

Expectations

  • Commit to a weekly schedule averaging 20 hours per week
  • Conduct him/herself with professionalism during all interactions with students, staff, and faculty at Loyola University Maryland
  • Attend weekly one on one meetings with his/her supervisor
  • Be available for some evening and weekend programs
  • Serve as a positive role model and advocate for students
