Students who compete for national academic awards typically have one or more summer research expereinces. Many of these opportunities are sponsered by government agencies, universities and colleges, or non-profit organizations.  Normally, these programs run for 8-11 weeks over the summer, provide a modest stipend, and may include subsidized housing.
