The Assessment Report that Kittelson & Associates prepared for Loyola University Maryland (Loyola) in November 2012 reflects an understanding of the university’s campus shuttle operations and an initial set of recommendations for how to streamline service.
- shuttles were a comfortable temperature
- shuttles were clean
- route names were clearly visible on shuttles
- users felt comfortable asking drivers for information
- Despite the clearly visible route name on the shuttle, riders almost always asked the driver if their intended destination was on the route of the shuttle
The study did a line graph of rider counts throughout the day to highlight our times of greatest need.
OPERATING COSTS PER REVENUE (SERVICE) HOUR
Loyola Shuttle – between $22 and $45 (depends on route; all but one route under $30)
Nationwide average of all transit agency bus services - $119
Maryland Transit Administration Buses - $164
OPERATING COSTS PER REVENUE (SERVICE) MILE
Loyola Shuttle – between $2.20 and $3.50 (depends on route)
Nationwide average of all transit agency bus services - $9.60
Maryland Transit Administration Buses - $14.23
Headways are the time it takes for a shuttle to complete its route.
After the study was completed, a chart was put together highlighting a new route and amount of shuttles on each route, showing significantly less wait times.
