Associate Director of Recreational Sports
(Programming and Assessment)
Alan Baker joined the Loyola University Maryland Department of Recreational Sports in July of 2012 as the Associate Director for Programs and Assessment. In this position, Alan is responsible for all programs and assessment for the Department of Recreational Sports. Alan assists in the oversight and staff supervision of the Outdoor Adventure Experience Student Leaders and direct oversight to the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, Outdoor Adventure Specialist and Program Coordinator.
Originally from Maryland, Alan attended both St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Radford University in Virginia for his undergraduate studies, completing his B.S. in Recreation and Leisure Services. Immediately following, Alan worked at Gettysburg College as an administrator for the Office of Experiential Education. Alan went on to work for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School as a wilderness instructor, rock specialist, course director, and Associate Program Director.
Before starting at Loyola, Alan owned a small business as a remodeling general contractor, honing both his affinity for customer service and also his appreciation of architectural design.
Alan can often be found in and around the FAC, but much of his time is also dedicated to offering experiential learning opportunities for the students he works with most closely. Generally, this happens by using the Outdoors as a classroom for learning; after being given the tools to be successful, students are challenged physically, mentally, and sometimes emotionally. Through this process, students experience a sense of accelerated growth that they then infuse into their leadership style as they navigate their role within the Loyola community or life after college.
In his spare time, aside from completing his masters in the Loyola School Counseling program or remodeling their house, Alan is often finding new adventures with his wife, Kristin, their daughter, Maeve, and a soon-to-be baby boy…along with their critters of course, Izzy and Misha!
