Assistant Director of Recreational Sports
(Outdoor Adventures and Administration)
Kristin Newland joined the department of recreational sports staff in 2009. Kristin manages the climbing wall, the Outdoor Adventure Center (A.K.A. Basecamp), and assists the associate director for programs and assessment with supervision of the Outdoor Adventure Experience leaders. One of the best parts of her job is leading Discovery, a week-long sea kayaking expedition for sophomores to explore their personal direction, with the assistant director of Sophomore Initiatives.
Kristin graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2004 where she earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology, with a concentration in human development. She went on to receive her master's degree in parks and recreation management from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2007, where she was the graduate assistant for the outdoor program. In July 2007, Kristin completed the 45-day Outdoor Leader Course with North Carolina Outward Bound. She is a member of NIRSA, the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education, and the Association of Experiential Education.
Kristin is from southern Maryland by way of Greensboro, N.C. She is passionate about the outdoors and education - especially when they work together. If can't find her, it is probably because she is in the woods with her husband and golden retriver mix.
