The Assistant Director of Student Life (AD) position offers a unique and rewarding role within the division of Student Development. A 12-month, live-in position, the Assistant Director (Gardens Area) is responsible for the holistic student development within a residential area of approximately 270 upper-division students, 1 Graduate Residence Coordinator (GRC), and 4 Resident Assistants (RAs).
The Assistant Director for the Gardens Area is also responsible for envisioning and executing office-wide training and staff development initiatives for 80 undergraduate RAs. Ideal candidates, guided by socially just practices, have knowledge of curriculum design, experience creating and assessing learning outcomes, strong presentation skills, and the ability to create engaging staff development activities in order to cultivate leadership & positive staff morale.
Within their area, the AD for the Gardens Area is responsible for leading the GRC and RA staff, designing area-specific community development plans, adjudicating and delegating the area’s student conduct caseload, communicating with parents and other stakeholders, and organizing opening and closing processes. On a small, collaborative campus, all Assistant Directors have the opportunity to be involved in campus-wide initiatives that will expose them to a number of different areas in student development and higher education.

Primary Job Responsibilities
- Support both the departmental and divisional goals focused on inclusion, social justice, and racial healing
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and team development of 80 undergraduate RAs
- Develop and implement a comprehensive 2-week fall staff training, a 2-day winter staff training, and monthly in-services
- Oversee the biannual RA evaluation process and collaborate with the Associate Director for Student & Staff Development on office-wide staff and residential assessment practices
- Create and implement recognition activities to foster motivated, informed, and cared-for student leaders
- Supervise 1 Graduate Residence Coordinators (GRC), indirectly supervise 4 Resident Assistants (RAs), and supervise 1 work-study Office Assistant (OA). Provide on-going training and development for all staff members
- Create population-based learning outcomes and design area specific community development plans based on the office’s social and educational aims. Provide direct leadership to GRCs and RAs for overall community development
- Serve as a University hearing officer and primary manager of the conduct caseload within the residential area
- Constructively resolve a variety of student and parent issues and concerns
- Serve in the on-call duty rotation for campus-wide emergencies, 2-3 weeks per semester or as needed, potentially responding to emergencies in all areas of residential living
- Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling in Student Affairs or a related field
- 0-3 years of post-graduate professional experience and 1-3 years live-in residence hall experience
- Demonstrated ability to support and advocate for underrepresented students as well as creating opportunities dedicated to developing students' understanding of identity development, privilege, oppression, social justice, bias, and/or inclusive language/actions
- Experience with on-call crisis response and as a student conduct officer
- Experience supervising Resident Assistants or other residential paraprofessional staff
- Strong public-speaking skills and a demonstrated ability to craft effective and creative training presentations
- Availability during night and weekend hours
