The Director of Student Life provides overall leadership, supervision, and management to the Office of Student Life, a multi-function office which includes housing operations, inclusion and community development/residence life, recruitment and staff development, and student conduct. The Director provides direct supervision to four Associate Directors and one Administrative Assistant. The Director establishes and maintains a budget of over $2,000,000 and coordinates and collaborates with various campus colleagues, including Public Safety, Facilities, and External Affairs. The Director reports directly to the Dean of Students. 

The Director provides senior leadership for the Student Life team, which requires skills in high-level crisis response, staff supervision and development, student conduct, and housing operations. In addition to direct supervision, the Director also provides indirect supervision of eight Assistant Directors, one Administrative Assistant, 20 Graduate Residence Coordinators (GRCs), 80 Resident Assistants (RAs), and a security desk staff of approximately 200 students. Loyola is a primarily residential campus, with approximately 85% of students living on campus for all four years. In addition to 17 residence halls, Loyola also has a master lease with a nearby apartment complex. The Office of Student Life also provides support to students who live off campus.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Supervision and Team Leadership

  • Directly supervise four Masters-level Associate Directors and one Administrative Assistant
  • Lead weekly staff meetings, provide weekly 1-1 supervision, and establish the departmental professional development plan
  • Indirectly supervise eight Masters-level Assistant Directors, one Administrative Assistant, 20 GRCs, 80 RAs, and approximately 200 desk assistants
  • Attend and lead (when needed) trainings, GRC in-services, RA All staff meetings, and other office functions
  • Monitor and support staff professional development and the attainment of area specific goals and objectives

Housing Operations

  • Provide oversight to openings and closings, housing assignments, and keys
  • Partner with Facilities to address concerns and proactively plan for residence hall improvements/construction. Assist in the development of renovation plans and the implementation of new residential facilities
  • Develop and interpret housing policies related to various areas, including early arrivals, contract extensions, and the housing selection process
  • Work with the Dean of Students to develop and manage an occupancy plan to address housing supply and demand
  • Forecast occupancy based on historical utilization data and retention rates. Compile housing occupancy and capacity data and present the information to various campus constituents, including the Budget Committee and divisional leadership

Student Conduct and Crisis Response

  • Oversee the student conduct process and insure the process is implemented in a consistent manner across campus
  • Meet regularly with the Associate Director of Student Conduct to review cases, policies, and procedures
  • Serve as a hearing officer for high-level conduct cases and hear appeals of student conduct cases
  • Provide oversight to the hearing process for Title IX cases and appeals
  • Oversee and serve on the on-call duty rotation with the Associate Directors and provide support/emergency response to the Student Life staff. 
  • Develop, communicate, and uphold policies and procedures with regards to Desk Operations and the security of residential facilities

Inclusion and Community Development

  • Support both the departmental and divisional goals focused on diversity and inclusion
  • Promote positive community development and quality residential programming. Equip staff to complete the residential programming model and support campus programming initiatives that promote community development.
  • Lead the staff to support the campus Late Night program initiatives. 
  • Promote faculty involvement in residential programming and foster theme development and promotion of Messina
  • Oversee assessment practices for the office including the annual Resident Student Survey. Utilize assessment data to inform practice and support residential community development.
  • Support the inclusion efforts of the Division and train the staff to foster inclusive residential communities. Advocate for the needs of underserved and underrepresented students.

Strategic Oversight

  • Forecast and allocate departmental budget of over $2,000,000
  • Serve on various University committees, including assisting in decision making around University closings and/or the University’s response to imminent threats
  • Oversee the response of Student Life staff during large-scale emergencies and campus crisis situations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents regarding issues and concerns related to housing operations, student conduct, and community development
  • Serve on the CARE Team and provide information and follow up regarding student concerns
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Public Safety 


  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling in Student Affairs or a related field
  • 8+ years of post-Master’s professional experience
  • 5+ years of residence life and on-call crisis response experience
  • Experience hiring, training, supervising staff, and managing staff development and leadership development. 
  • Budget management skills, ability to forecast occupancy levels, staff needs, and resource allocation
  • Ability to interact with parents, students, faculty, administrators, Public Safety and other stakeholders to advance the Student Life agenda of a living and learning community.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all University partners
  • Ability to interpret legal requirements and maintain a fair and effective conduct system
  • Ability to generate data which demonstrates effectiveness as well as ability to analyze and interpret data to make decisions about plans and processes
  • Ability to support the University’s goals for institutional diversity, as well as the goals and values of a Catholic, Jesuit education
