The office of student engagement and the Department of Recreational Sports - Outdoor Adventure Experience present DISCOVERY, week-long outdoor adventure of backpacking, reflection, and camping in Shenandoah National Park. DISCOVERY will challenge you to seek your personal direction through experiential learning, discussion, adventure programming, and reflection. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, DISCOVERY is open to all undergraduate students.
DISCOVERY Participation Timeline Spring 2016
Step 1: Attend the optional INFO SESSION on February 9!
Interested in joining us on DISCOVERY? We encourage you to attend this year's spring info session to learn more about this amazing experience. The Discovery Info Session, featuring a panel of past DISCOVERY participants who will share their pictures and stories, will be taking place in Hopkins Court Lounge on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 7 p.m.
Step 2: SIGN UP by February 26!
SIGN UP HERE starting Wednesday, February 10. You'll sign up for a small group meeting (Step 3) and don't need to worry about paying anything until after that meeting. Registration runs until 4 p.m. on February 26 (last day before Spring Break). We can take up to 24 students on DISCOVERY each year.
Step 3: Attend a SMALL GROUP MEETING (week of March 14) to confirm your interest.
These half-hour, informal group meetings are a way for both you and us to make sure that DISCOVERY is a good fit for what you're looking for. After your meeting, we will ask that you confirm your interest and secure a spot on the trip by paying the $25 registration fee at that point (need-based scholarships are available for students who can't comfortably cover the $25 cost).
Step 4: Attend 1-2 PREP MEETINGS and Get to Know Your Fellow Participants
You'll be asked to attend one to two group meetings in the spring prior to the trip. We'll be giving out useful information about what you'll be doing on DISCOVERY, where you'll be going, what to pack, and how best to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. You'll also get to spend some quality time with your fellow DISCOVERY participants to get to know them!
Step 4: DISCOVERY Trip (May 14 - 19, 2016)
On DISCOVERY, you'll spend the week backpacking, camping, reflecting on your life, and making some great memories with new friends. When you return to campus on the 19th, you'll have had many exciting adventures to tell your friends back home!
