Choosing a Major

Selecting a major can be a difficult task. Remember, it is a process, so make sure you spend some time thinking about it before you make a decision. Your goal should be to narrow your focus until you have a few areas to explore in greater depth. The following steps may assist you on this journey:

  1. Begin with an examination of your interests. What excites you? What types of careers appeal to you?
  2. Examine your abilities. What are your strengths and weaknesses? What are your skills?
  3. Examine your career values. Examples include helping society, security, and status.
  4. Explore careers. Speak with friends, family, professors, and alumni. Visit the Career Resource Library and sign out books such as the "Great Jobs For..." series.
  5. Narrow down your choices and choose a major. Based upon your research and self-assessment, what are the potential majors that interest you?

Self-assessments offered online may also provide guidance and insight.

Remember, you will do your best in a major that you enjoy! This will increase the motivation and enthusiasm you bring to your academic and career pursuits. Meet with a career advisor for help clarifying your interests, values, and talents as they relate to major and career choice.
